Nutrition and Maintenance

• Newts do well on a diet consisting of a variety of vitamin/calcium dusted insects such as small crickets and waxworms, as well as earthworms or red wigglers.

• They can also learn to eat frozen or freeze-dried fish food.

• Offer an amount that can be consumed by the end of the day.
Maintaining a healthy environment for your Newts is an ongoing commitment. You can keep your aquarium in great shape with minimal effort by following this schedule:

Maintenance Schedule

Feed Newts daily.

Check habitat temperature and humidity, and
general health of the Newts.

Remove waste and any uneaten or dead insects.

Perform a 10% partial water change, adding dechlorinated water.

Scrub glass to remove algae, if necessary.

Vacuum gravel and replace 25% of the water with dechlorinated water.

Perform filter maintenance (i.e., replace filter cartridge, replace carbon, rinse pre-filter, etc.).

Scrub glass and prune live plants, if necessary.

Always add a dechlorinator or water conditioner to tap water before adding it to the habitat. Do not use soaps or detergents to clean terrarium or decor, as they may be toxic. Always wash your hands before and after handling Newts or anything in the terrarium, or after cleaning the habitat. Adults should assist young children with hand washing and monitor them around pets. Do not clean habitats or equipment in the kitchen sink or near food preparation areas.
