International Homeless Pets Day

August 2, 2010 -

In 1992, the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) introduced International Homeless Animals’ Day® and Candlelight Vigils. The focus of the day is to bring to light a global tragedy that we’re all too familiar with – homeless-pet overpopulation. Each year, ISAR reserves the third Saturday of August to commemorate the day and to promote new campaigns, programs and ideas – focusing particularly on spay/neuter. This year, the event falls on August 21.

PetSmart Charities supports spay/neuter efforts across North America and acknowledges the importance of reducing the number of homeless and unwanted puppies and kittens that are born every year.  In addition to spay/neuter, another key component in helping to reduce homeless-pet overpopulation is adoption.

Following on the heels of International Homeless Animals’ Day is the PetSmart Charities® Second Chance for Love National Adoption Weekend. The three-day adoption event is Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 12 at all 1,160 PetSmart® stores in North America.

The event goal is to find lifelong, loving homes for 19,600 dogs, cats and other pets from shelters and rescue agencies across the U.S. and Canada.  More than 2,000 agencies that care for homeless pets are expected to participate this fall. PetSmart Charities will hold another national adoption weekend, November 12-14.

Why should YOU adopt?  Simple… adopting a pet saves a life!  Plus, adopted pets really do make some of the best companions.  Sadly, about 8 million dogs and cats end up in U.S. shelters every year, and only about half of them find homes.  When you adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue group, you prevent one more pet from being euthanized.

PetSmart Charities strives to bring attention to the availability of pets at shelters and rescue groups and the benefits of pet adoption. Animal-welfare partners utilize the PetSmart Charities adoption centers located in all PetSmart® stores year-round. During the last 14 years, PetSmart Charities has helped save the lives of more than 4 million pets. For every minute the adoption centers are open, one pet’s life is saved!

Remember…when you adopt a homeless pet, you save a life and get a loyal companion in return!
