i think the basics to training a dog is this:

rewarding it when its good: give it a treat such as a peice of hot dog, a store bought treat.(i persanoly think they like hot dogs better)

punishing it when its bad:
put the dog in its creat for a few minutes. when you go to let it out, make sure its not begging to get out. if it is and you let it out that is teaching the puppy: "if i whine my owner will let me out."

i would not start training right away if it is just a puppy. after all, your mommy didnt start to punish you when you were just a few months old.
