I need help with my chihuahua. She is 4 years old. My friend let me have her about a month and a half ago because all she would do was stay in her cage and she just seemed so miserable there. She loved me, every time I would go over there she would stay right under me. If she even heard my voice she would get all happy. Well here for the last 4 or 5 days she has started doing the same thing here. I can call her and she won't come to me so I will have to go look for her and I find her in her cage. She won't come out I have to actually get her out of the cage. I have tried shutting the cage so she can't go in there but she'll just hide under the bed or in covers or something. It is so sad when she acts like this. What can I do or does anyone know why she does this?

Hi Tara,
I have a chihuaha who was abused and tormented. He was used for breeding and the woman had 4 kids under 10 years old that abused him and tormented him. She sold the female and the pups and was going to put him down because of his behavior. Not wanting to be near anyone or hiding under the bed.

It takes awhile..and trust is the Big thing. I would give him treats to draw him out and if he didn't come out I would leave it. Eventually he would come out and get it..I also got him toys to play with as well as patting him when I could. I also put hime on my bed and tried to pat him a little at a time. It has taken 7 months but, he has become the most lovable dog. Take him for walks also...All these things are bonding..When you see her lie on her back and wants to be petted more..That means you have bonded with her. It takes time as these dogs are very timid and their bark is bigger than the bit. He still shivers but, that is the statue of th chihuahua.. Sara
