Hey all, I'm new to the forum but I've been searching all over the internet and I still can't come up with a definitive answer, solution or suggestion. I have an 11 month old German Shepherd Mix who I adopted about 2 months ago from a local shelter. He's an active and friendly guy who really enjoys romping around at the park. Sunday evening, I was at Pet Smart buying some food and treats, and I decided to pick up one of those laser pointers, thinking that he'd enjoy chasing the light around. So of course he did for about 15 minutes, and then I put it away. But now, 3 days later, he's chasing around any shadow that he sees! Doesn't matter what the source is, he'll stare at the floor waiting for it to move, and then he'll try to jump on it, attack it, etc. I have been reading about some dogs developing OCD from chasing laser pointers repeatedly, and of course had I known that before, I wouldn't have even bought the thing. I haven't brought it out since, but he's still searching the floors and the walls looking for it. I guess the good thing is that I can distract him from searching once he starts (he doesn't become aggressive or anything) and he doesn't skip meals or anything like that just to chase the shadows. I've tossed his rawhide and he'll go and chase that and chew on it for a while, or he'll keep bringing me back his ball so I can throw it again, but once he's left alone for a few minutes, he goes right back to looking for the shadows. Has anyone experienced anything like this with their pets? Any suggestions on how to stop this behavior? Will he just grow out of it? Help!
P.S. Sorry about the long post!
