I just recently purchased a beautiful shihtzu from an online kennel. I'm concerned because the pup seems withdrawn socially. She never comes out of her little kennel. I have to physically reach in and take her out by hand to take her outside to do her business and she is always nervous. What should i do about this situation? I show her love and always praise when she does good but it doesn't seem to matter. I've only had her a week and everything checks out with the vet. Is it that she needs more time to warm up to us? Or should I be concerned? I've been around other shihtzus but they didn't act this way. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Carol

Unfortunately, if she came from an online kennel she is most likely a puppy mill dog. She would never have come out of her kennel until she was sent to you. This means that she would not have had any socialization or experience with new things or people. I am no expert but I think the most important thing is to go really slow with her and let HER do things on her own. This means instead of reaching in to get her from her crate, try and convince her out with a really good treat. It might take a while to convince her but if you keep grabbing her out of her safe spot she will probably continue to fear you and she will never learn to do things on her own (ie get over her fear of everything). I hope this helps and I hope she gets better so you can enjoy your new puppy :)
