Pretty soon, the frost will be on the trees and that means it's time to start thinking about cold weather safety for your cat. These guidelines will help you protect your pet when the cold creeps up.
- It's best to keep your cat inside at all times, but especially when the mercury dips. If he does manage to get outside, rinse off his legs and stomach when he comes back inside. This will help ensure that he doesn't ingest any salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while grooming himself. Dry him thoroughly afterward.
- Your cat's coat may look thick, but it doesn't guarantee warmth. Hypothermia is a real concern when cats are exposed to cold weather for long periods, or get both wet and cold.
- It's important to keep your cat groomed because mats reduce the fur's ability to insulate your pet. But don't shave him when it's cold outside -consult a professional grooming salon if you need help with reducing matting.
- Kittens and older cats may need extra attention in cold weather. A cuddly bed, blanket or pillow can provide a warm place to slumber as long at it's away from drafts and doors.
- Cats are resourceful when it comes to looking for warm spots in the cold winter months and unfortunately often choose warm car engines as their place of choice to heat up. To avoid injuring a cat during the winter months, tap on the hood of your car and honk the horn, then wait long enough for a cat to leave the engine compartment before starting the engine.
- Pets may gobble up more food than usual during colder months because they may burn more calories to stay warm. Watch their food intake and requirements and consult your veterinarian about their specific nutritional needs.
- Winter can be one of the most beautiful times of year - snow is on the ground, icicles are hanging in trees, and there's plenty of merrymaking. Help your cat enjoy it to its fullest by keeping an eye toward safety and warmth where he's concerned.
