Choosing a Cat Collar
One item that every cat should have is a good collar. Here are some guidelines to follow when making your selection.
Generally, the collar you choose is merely a matter of personal preference. The most important thing to remember is to get a collar that fits properly. Every pet should wear a collar with an ID tag that gives your name, address, and phone number.
Since cats like to get themselves in and through tight spots, it is best to fit them with a collar that won't get caught easily and cause strangulation as they are jumping or climbing through objects. "Break-away" collars work best for this situation. These collars allow the cat to escape should it get its collar caught on something. By the way, break-away collars are not acceptable for dogs because they can allow dogs to break free while on a leash.
A cat does not typically need to be walked as would a dog. However, if you want to exercise a cat, they can be taught to walk on a leash. Harnesses that are the Figure 8 style or H-style are made especially for cats (and rabbits).
To get the proper fit, use a measuring tape or piece of non-stretchy string. Measure around your cat's neck, making sure you separate the hair and get down to the skin. Add one inch to your measurement, as you want the collar to be worn loosely around the neck. You want the collar to be able to slip over the cat's head, or break away if the collar catches on something. You have the proper fit if you are able to get one finger between the collar and the neck.
