Cleaning Your Pet's Bed
PetSmart Martha Stewart Pets
Pets offer devoted and loving companionship and bring joy to the home. However, they also bring messes and dirt. A pet's bedding tends to receive the worst damage. Keeping it clean doesn't have to be a monumental chore. For a happy pet and a tidy home, follow these simple steps once a month, or as needed, to clean your pet's bed.
1. Vacuum the bed thoroughly to remove excess hairs, dirt, or other debris. Roll a lint roller over the bed to pull away hairs that the vacuum did not remove.
2. Remove the outer fabric cover from the lined cushion. The fabric cover can be washed more frequently if needed.
3. Put the fabric cushion cover and the bed base (if it is machine washable) into the washing machine. Wash separately from other laundry or minimally with like colors. Use a large load setting, cold water, and plenty of pet-safe laundry detergent to aid in dislodging as much pet hair and dirt as possible. Repeat the wash cycle for especially dirty beds.
4. Dry the washed bedding in the clothes dryer with at least one pet-safe dryer sheet. The dryer sheet will reduce static electricity and remove more pet hairs. Use a low temperature setting for 20 minutes to remove hair and wrinkles and then air dry to avoid shrinking the pet bed.
