Not all pet treats have to be edible. If you're concerned about your pet's caloric intake, but still want to reward their good behavior, there are healthier, zero-calorie alternatives, says Lynne Hudlow in her blog posted on banfield.net, the web site of Banfield, The Pet Hospital®.

Rather than giving them a biscuit for a reward, Hudlow suggests the following healthy treat options (we added a few ideas too) that will not only boost their metabolism, it will also please your pet and strengthen the bond between you and your best friend:

  • Take your pet for a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to the dog park.
  • Treat your dog or cat to their favorite game, like "chase the laser pen," fetch or tug.
  • Take your dog for a spin in the car and roll the windows down a bit to let them sniff the fresh air and its scents.
  • Treat them to an extra-long tummy rub or scritch behind the ears.
  • For those times when you really want to recognize their good behavior, treat them to a new plush toy.
  • Sing their praises! Verbally reward them with a lot of "good dogs, pretty kitties" and other praise.
  • Nothing says "reward" like a good rub down! Treat them to a gentle massage.
  • Throw 'em a bone - a rubber one of rope one, that is.
  • Let your pet sit on your lap or snuggle up with you on the sofa.
  • Give them plenty of hugs and kisses. They're free and contain zero fat!

These are some fantastic treat alternatives. I think that we all get carried away with giving our pets treats of the edible kind. We don't think about the consequences. I actually think they would like praise the best.
