Spaying female cats and dogs not only reduces the homeless pet population, it can improve your relationship with your pet. This simple surgery can prevent health and behavioral  problems associated with heat cycles, giving you a longer and more enjoyable life together.

Female dogs generally are in heat (ready to become pregnant) twice a year for about three weeks each time. A cat’s heat cycle lasts about ten days and generally recurs every two to three weeks until she becomes pregnant.  Spayed cats and dogs do not go into heat and therefore do not exhibit the following issues:

  • When in heat, dogs can become more irritable and even show signs of aggression toward their families. Cats often yowl throughout the entire heat cycle to attract a mate, and they rub excessively against people and furniture to intensify their territory. Spaying female dogs and cats not only removes these hormonal frustrations, but makes them calmer and better behaved members of the family.
  • Dogs and cats are more likely to escape from the house or backyard as they search for a mate. Spayed pets don’t feel the need to roam, nor do they attract potential suitors to the house. Instead, spayed pets prefer to stay close to home where they can be better family companions and protectors.
  • Spaying your dog or cat provides health benefits, too. The surgery can prevent ovarian and uterine cancers and uterine infections, as well as unwanted pregnancies and the complications that can follow.

The idea that pets must be 6 months old for the surgery is outdated. Early age spays (as early as 6 weeks old) have been successfully performed in the United States for over 20 years. This procedure is quicker, less traumatic for the pet, and is more likely to provide behavioral and health benefits.

Spaying our pets makes our relationships with them longer and happier…for everybody.
