Question:
We have a beautiful new 9 week old yellow lab named Charlie. We both work outside the home and would like to know if it's safe to leave him in a dog run for a few hours as opposed to an indoor crate for some variety when we're gone?
Answer:

Congratulations on the new puppy. It is probably safe to leave him in the dog run. You’ll want to make sure that the run is secure and that the yard is secure in case he digs out. You’ll also want to make sure that there is nothing harmful (rocks, etc) in the dog run/yard. Additionally, he is apt to develop bad behaviors out there like barking, chewing (if there’s a dog house or anything out there), and digging. Make sure you leave great toys and chewbones for him and rotate them frequently. If you notice him starting any bad habits, I would stop leaving him in the dog run. You don’t want him to practice bad behaviors and make a habit of it.
